Austin Embedded Design

About Company

Founded in 2011 to provide design and development services to the embedded system market.  Most embedded project designs start with an idea of how to simplify a task or consolidate separate systems into one.

Going from the initial concept to a fully realized product involves the expertise of many different disciplines.  This includes system design, circuit, hardware, firmware, mechanical, manufacturing, and test.

Many companies lack the internal resources to cover all of the areas required for a design project, or they need a design produced on a tighter schedule than they are staffed to accommodate.  We provide additional resources to cover those areas without the ongoing expense of permanent staff.

What is an embedded system?

The term "embedded system" has been used to describe everything from a simple switch with some internal logic to a network personal computers performing a coordinated function.  The scope of products defined under this title is large and diverse, however, they do share some common attributes:

  • Designed to perform a specific task
  • Function without user intervention
  • Recover from errors and continue or assume a safe state until repaired.

Some examples from everyday life:

  • Microwave Oven
  • DVD player
  • Car engine control unit (ECU)

At the heart of an embedded system is logic used to determine what the system should do next based on the current state and external input.  This input may be in the form of an obvious user interface (UI) such as the controls on a microwave oven, or it may have no discernable UI such as a car ECU.  The latter example relying on sensors, monitoring performance of the engine, to determine what actions to take.
